Tips
on how to improve your web ranking
Choose a right Title
First of all, make sure each page of your site has a descriptive
title. Because search engines usually give the most weight to
the page's title, you should place a descriptive phrase between
the <title> tags. For best results, however, keep it in
200 characters and to-the-point. Also, since search engines return
the title as the search results, your HTML title should be both
descriptive and attractive.
For example, the following title describes well the site, and
therefore is a good choice:
<TITLE> TotalAd web promotion - web hosting, engine submit,
banner ads, e-zine, meta tag generator. </TITLE>
<META> tags You can control how search engines catalog your
site with <META> tags.
Not all search engines make use of these tags, but using them
will definitely improve your position in those that do. All <META>
tags should be placed within the <HEAD>...</HEAD>
portion of the document.
The <META> description tag lets you specify a short summary
about your web site. This tag should clearly describe what one
can find at your Web site. Here's an example:
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="#1 best selling
5 star award winning web promotion and site submission software.
Increase your web site traffic by submit your sites to 800+ search
engines.">
Some search engines limit the description to 200 characters. To
be on the safe side, make sure your description does not exceed
200 bytes (characters). If you do not use <META> tags to
describe your site, the Web page description will be derived from
the first 200 characters in the HTML
<BODY>...</BODY> portion. Also note that there should
be only one <META> description tag per page.
The <META> keywords tag lets you specify a set of keywords
that a search robot should give precedence to when cataloging
the page or how people can find your web site. Here's an example:
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="web promotion,
site submission, web advertising, increase traffic, promotion
software, web site promotion">
The keywords can include up to 1000 characters of text. Be sure
that the keywords you choose are relevant to the contents of your
page. Note that the keywords are used in the indexing process
but will not display on your Web page or on a search response
page. Try to incorporate singular and plural cases of words, as
well as active and passive verbs. Also make sure your keyword
list includes both general and specific words related to your
site. You rarely want to target a single keyword, because, with
the billions of words indexed on the Web now, one word simply
won't cut it. Always use phrases, not plain words, in your list.
Frame
Sites using frames should definitely make use of <META>
tags. The main HTML file contains the <FRAMESET> tags, but
fails to provide robots with any real useful information about
the Web site. Therefore, you should utilize the <META> description
tag to provide a description summarizing the site's
contents. If JavaScript (or any other scripting language) makes
up the first several hundred characters on your page, you should
use the <META> description tag so your site comes up with
a meaningful description in search results.
Web
Site Contents
Search engines rely mostly on word density (frequency relative
to the total size of the page) or distribution (how well the word
is spread throughout the page). Some search engines even give
precedence to text near the top of a Web page, so make sure you
place the most important stuff at the top. Furthermore, search
engines that do not support <META> tags use the first 200
(or 250) characters for the site's description, so the first paragraph
should describe/sell your service.
Use
<Hn>...</Hn> for headers, rather than the <FONT>...</FONT>
tag definition. Some search engines consider header text particularly
important.
Image
Description
If your site mainly consists of images, you should use the ALT
attribute to describe each image. Most search engines index the
ALT attribute in the <IMG> tag. The following HTML definition
shows how to use this attribute:<IMG SRC="image.gif"
HEIGHT="486" WIDTH="60" ALT="TotalAd
Web Site Promotion">

Get a Feel for Your Audience. To succeed on the web you must find
your target audience/niche.
Browse Around
To get a feel of your audience, browse around categories or channels
many of the search engines and directories offer (especially Yahoo!
and Open Directory), and see what similar sites are out there.
By getting the feel of your competitors, you will better target
your audience.
Research Your Target Audience
The best way to find your target audience is search all of the
major search engines with relevant targeted keywords and see what
relevant sites come up. (Similar sites and direct competitors)
A good way to research your audience is to use MetaCrawler, which
summarizes the results of most of the Major Engines and Directories.
Also use the Engines individually to get an idea of how each one
works.
What
does your site have to offer?
Does
it:
Provide Free Information?
Provide Fee-Based Information?
Sell a Service?
Sell a Product?
Also ask yourself:
Could you sell your product directly on the web?
Could you sell your product in a store? (Branding)
These questions will also help you find your place on the web.
What To Do
Compile a list of about 20 relevant keywords and key phrases that
you think people will use to find your web site. Don't be too
vague or too specific. About 2-3 word keyphrases are fine.
What
Not To Do
Never submit your site to any Engine or Directory until it is
completely ready for submission (basically after your read the
rest of this).

Picking Effective
Keywords, Title, and Description
Keywords
For your keywords, choose a main keyphrase that incorporates about
2-3 main keywords that you would think people would you to find
a site like yours. Don't be too vague. Vague keywords (like "web",
"internet", or "free") are words you want
to avoid. They are dead weight words and will hurt placement.
Alta Vista (and most search engines) will ignore words like web
and internet. Specific keywords that are relevant to your web
site is what you want here.
Narrow down and refine your initial list of 20 to about 10 keywords.
More keywords are not better because the more keywords, the less
weight each receives by search engines.
Put yourself in a web surfer's shoes and think of what you would
type a search to find a site like yours.
Just like when you're researching keywords, use the same tips
when finalizing them.
Don't use general, vague words like "Web" or "Internet."Use
specific words and 2-3 word phrases if possible.
Never use irrelevant words.
Always use relevant words.
Target, Target, Target.
Specific, Targeted, and Relevant keywords that is what you want.
Title
The title is probably one the most important factors. Don't get
more than 1 keyphrase in the title of each page. If you are sure
of the phrase that you think people will type in to find your
site, incorporate it into your title. Don't write keywords multiple
times in the title either.
Description
The only search tool that puts major emphasis on the description
is Yahoo!, and it's all up to them what the description will be.
Just remember to keep your description to about 200 characters
long (including spaces) and make it interesting so people click.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prepare Your Web Site
After you've found your targeted keywords, description, and title
and finalized all information, you're ready to make the final
changes to your site.
Before Submitting...
Make changes that will allow people to easily navigate your site.
Use colors that please the eye and convince them to stay around
and browse. Simple black text on a white background works well.
Three big no's:
Don't submit pages that have http-equiv="refresh" tags
(redirect). Most robot-driven engines won't list them.
Don't submit pages that don't have any text and all images. Text
keyword density is very important. Even if the images all have
alt tags, you still need at least a 250 character description
with your keywords in the
<body>.
Don't submit frames, many robot-driven engines have problems indexing
frames (notably HotBot), submit the main page in the frame. Make
sure you have text and links to the other pages in your site on
this main page, because users won't see the navigation frame that
most frame sites have.
META Tag Alterations
You will have to input META Tags which are hidden in the html.
You can't see META Tags while looking at your site, but the major
search engine robots use them to determine relevancy and placement.
META Tags are NOT the magic bullet that make or break your web
site's placement. META Tags are only a small factor search engine
robots look at to determine placement.
If you're not sure how to alter your META Tags, use META Tag Builder,
which will create META Tags for you.
Check your Web Site
Meta Medic
First of all use Northern Web's Meta Medic to check your META
Tags.
Some tips when using Meta Medic:
The "Space Utilization" feature on Meta Medic is pretty
useless and very inaccurate. Just remember to limit your description
to about 200 characters and 6-10 keyphrases. However, Meta Medic
is very good when it comes to picking up spamming. Just make sure
your tag isn't "disqualified" and you will be okay.
Search Engine Check
The best place to test out your site after your META Tags have
been inputted (and checked with META Medic) is Infoseek. Infoseek
will index your site in a few minutes, but be cautious! They will
only accept 1 URL every 24 hours, so will have to wait 24 hours
before updating. Don't be discouraged if you
can't seem to get your site good placement on Infoseek, all engines
work differently, so if you use the general techniques mentioned
you should be okay.
